He considers two explanations for water rising to the summits of mountains: water could be absorbed upward as into a porous sponge; and within the caverns of the earth, water could evaporate from the sun's heat and form vapor, much as the sun's heat generates clouds above the earth. Using prevailing climatic conditions and differences in temperatures to reason this second argument, he eventually rejects it.
